Crotch In The Dirt- Christun Erwin

There is a phrase used when taking Knife Control Concepts that, outside of flow, is kind of one of the more foundational concepts of the program. It’s rather crass so I will give you a more elegant version of it and let you use your imagination, “Keep your crotch in the dirt.” When teaching self-defense, I emphasize movement over moves because reaction verses response is more effective in my opinion. A person during an altercation is not likely to pull from their brain and execute productive exact moves to counter the other, at least not without a massive amount of repetition. If you throw in adrenaline dumps and freeze responses, “Flight of the Sword D,” against sewing machine stabbing is probably not going to fly. Pun intended. Its going to be an ugly scramble at the very least. That is why I love the KCC curriculum so much and why I am so pumped to see it in action with other things.   With Knife Control Concepts you are learning to use the other persons energy against th...

Why Teaching Multi-Faceted Moves in Women’s Self-Defense is Dumb/ AKA Address the Freeze Response

In every class I have taught I use a demonstration of calling on a random gal to come up to the front. I stand about 10-15 feet away and then start walking towards her at an even pace. Speaking in a harsh tone about my neck hurting, I use blame language, something like, “Lady it was you who hit my f*%king car!” To date there has not been one woman who hasn’t froze. They stand there wondering what the hell is going on and blink at me immobile.    I am 5’6’’, usually wearing a brightly colored T-Shirt with a stupid saying, they are in my course to become safer, and yet they are rendered stock-still. Mostly due to bewilderment, some to language shock (see my article here on why this is very important), some a bit of confusion, but that’s exactly it, these are all normal responses to even if I was a 200-pound man, same phrasing, walking up to them in a parking lot. In the end they are rendered stunned, and that person is in their space set up perfectly for a surprise blow w...

Truck Pulling, Lisa Frank, and MMA- Christun Erwin

My friend and fellow fighty gal at TCB, Natasha used to be a Strongman Competitor. She is approximately 175 of all phenomenal muscle and physique, can squat 1075 pounds, and also has the personality to show up to her gym in jeans just because, and then accidentally participate in a full body truck pull event. Yep, you read that right. Showed up, thought, meh I could haul that giant a$$ truck across a parking lot, hold my pre workout gel, then proceeded to achieve.   It is not a goal of mine to be a powerlifter, like at all, hell I am not a lifter of anything much more than a fifteen-pound kettle bell; #bodytypeofaslightheroinaddict. So when someone that can basically haul a semi across asphalt calls and politely asks you to attend an MMA Seminar, you say yes. I had a hunch that I was going to be rag dolled the entire time, I was not wrong.   J Street Fights is a Professional and Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Promotion that recently started getting its roll on here in North...

I Will Fight You For a Balloon/ Virginia Beach Jiu Jitsu EIR

When our Arzetta came to us she was three. She had long been known about and prayed constantly over for her safety. According to the state, who had already terminated rights to six of her older siblings (we had just started fostering her one-month-old baby brother who would also eventually be adopted by us too), a well child check had been done and they didn’t know where she was. They had no idea if she was hurt, hungry, anything; the was a court order out to remove her from the home, but she was in the wind.   The night I got the call that she had been found I cried so many happy tears while I drove to Northwest Arkansas to get her. I won’t go too much into the situation she was found in or the circumstances surrounding it, but you would never find a person happier to be picking lice out of a baby’s hair just staring at her in disbelief knowing she was finally safe with us. She was the most unhappy little girl we had taken care of to date and her adjustment into the home wa...

I Have Lost Many Times, But I Have Never Been Defeated

Last night at TCB we died. Our trainer Aaron Kimball had a point to prove and I am sure he stated it prior, but it didn’t set in because I was too concerned about how to reattach my arm when it fell off from the gazillion jab reps. Surprisingly, he was in a rather jovial mood while doing it, probably a little psychopathic, but hey, we are a diverse mix there.    This past Saturday night was a rather big fight night in my world. I had several different gyms and people across the US that I had trained with and was now cheering for. Two of them were some pretty awesome women on the east coast, and the other four were our local boys here from TCB on the card at J Street Fights. To say that I have had the privilege to meet and train with some incredible individuals is an understatement and this last Saturday was a giant conglomerate of MMA for me. It was a fun challenge to root for those physically in front of me as well as keep up with the others via social media. My girls ...

Murder in the City AKA Keeping Your Kids Safe At large Events- Christun Erwin

One of my favorite songs is called, Murder in the City, by the Avett Brothers. Based on the title some are put off immediately and when I call the song sweet and impactful, they are perplexed. Others will just look at me and say, “Yeah Christun, for you that makes sense….” Either way the first time I listened to the lyrics was ironically also the first time I had actually heard of the band; some friends had a couple extra tickets and wanted to know if Ryan and I would like to go. Three Mango White Claws in, beautiful outdoor Arkansas Music Pavilion setting, perfect 74-degree weather, this song comes on and it has both Ryan and I dropping the waterworks worse than me getting bested by the double end bag.            The Avett Brothers became a thing in our family with a goal of mine to get all nine of our kids to go to a concert together. A couple weeks ago during an evening monsoon we met said goal. Our oldest two daughters are gro...

Rogue Methods Close Contact Gunfighter EIR X2- Christun Erwin

I have to hand it to them, both places I have taken Rogue Methods Close Contact Gunfighter Courses have been nestled in majestic sandwiches. The one in Kentucky a couple of months ago, and this one last weekend close to Lebanon, MO had settings of sheer natural beauty and made for pleasant days. I had seen RM was in my neck of the woods for the weekend and with the prospect of no plane travel or hotel stay, I snatched up the opportunity for a quick two-and-a-half-hour jaunt over to Ozark School of Gunfighting.   David Acosta was teaching Fieldcraft Survivals Gunfighter Pistol 1 on Saturday and Carbine 1 on Sunday with a Saturday evening of close contact pistol fighting for Rogue Methods. David had been an instructor-in-training at my last course and this go-round he was running the show. He didn’t disappoint before, and he didn’t this time either. He made the class his and I loved the inclusion of personal stories that related to what we were learning from his time on a SWAT...
